What is labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is a procedure that reduces or reshapes the female external genital structures. More and more women request this procedure to alleviate the discomfort caused by a large, thick, or asymmetric labia minora. This discomfort can interfere with biking, working out, wearing tight clothes, and sexual intercourse. If you feel pain from the twisting and tugging of the labia or itchiness or irritation, you may benefit from labiaplasty.
How can a labiaplasty help me?
The procedure aims to reduce the labia minora so that the folds don’t hang below the labia majora. Asymmetry can also be reduced when one is longer than the other, and the length of both labia can be reduced so that it no longer twists or tugs. Labiaplasty is a standard vaginal rejuvenation treatment, and more and more women are scheduling the procedure.
What can I expect during the procedure?
At Central Texas Urogynecology & Continence Center, Dr. Antonini performs labiaplasty with the TempSure Revival™ device. TempSure Revival™ uses radiofrequency energy, which results in minimal scarring and faster healing times (compared to competitive devices). This is due to the fact that you will experience lessened tissue trauma with TempSure.
Two of the most popular types of labiaplasty are the trim and wedge procedures. With the trim procedure, extra tissue in the labia is removed and sewn up directly. With the wedge procedure, a pie-shaped piece of tissue is removed, but a natural border is maintained. Extra folds of the clitoral hood can be reduced at the same time as a labiaplasty. Absorbable sutures are used to close up the surgical wounds.
What can I expect from the results and recovery?
Labiaplasty typically results in a shorter labia minora that no longer hangs below the level of the labia majora. Most patients find relief from the twisting and tugging of their labia after the procedure. Studies show a high satisfaction rate among women who have received labiaplasty surgery.
In terms of recovery, TempSure Revival™ allows for quicker recovery and decreased postoperative pain compared to traditional surgery with a scalpel.
